there are 2 ways google webmaster tools verify your website. by adding codes to a meta tag to <head> section of html code or by uploading html file.

but you will be hit with problem if you use free services such as wordpress.com where you cannot edit the html code nor upload a file to the server.

fortunately there’s a work around solution for wordpress.com. summary of the steps:

  1. from google webmaster tools » verify a site page, choose ‘upload html file’ method
  2. go back to wordpress.com, create a new page (not post!)
  3. copy the html file name from the verify page and paste as title of the new page, include ‘.html’ extension.
  4. publish the page
  5. verify your blog

the downside of this method is, if the pages as listed, this page will be listed as well.

a better way, change the permalink or slug of an existing page (eg About) to the google coded file name, include ‘.html’. the ‘.’ will be removed when it’s saved. don’t worry. wordpress.com will strip off the ‘.’ and show the page without the ‘.’.
